Good Reasons For Starting A Neighborhood Watch Program
The following is an excerpt from an email submitted to the editor.  If you live in Galena 1, please consider supporting the
initiation of a Neighborhood Watch program.  If you are interested, email the editor at
galena_reno@yahoo.com.  When there
is enough support, you will be notified of the next step!

In light of the recent fires in South Lake Tahoe it becomes even more imperative that neighbors have the opportunity to
get to know one another and work together should a disaster strike our neighborhood. Galena II already has a very
successful Watch program in place.
Neighborhood Watch Programs around the country have proven to be very successful...  Not just in deterring crime, but
alerting neighbors to other incidents worth noting / being aware of.
Because our neighborhood is quite large, we will most certainly need several volunteers who can act as "Block
Captains" in gathering their closest neighbors together to bring everyone " on the same page" with vital, up to the minute
alerts. Group NW e-mails are a terrific way to alert fellow neighbors who simply cannot attend meetings but want to be in
the loop". Once we have volunteers working with their closest neighbors, meet with the Sheriff's Office , and devise areas
to be covered, we can then erect official Neighborhood Watch signs. It's not an easy task but the benefits are immense.
No one has to attend meetings or become a "Block Captain".  All that is needed is the willingness to become part of the
program by letting us know of their interest to look out for their neighbors. This can be accomplished via e-mails, flyers,
etc....

Most of us here already look out for our closest neighbors. This only enhances the success of a NW program by allowing
everyone to be included in sharing noteworthy incidents. In addition, the Sheriffs' Office works very closely with NW
Programs and they provide invaluable advice / suggestions we may have never considered. Our quiet, forested area is
growing in leaps and bounds. With many new homes being built on the Mt. Rose corridor and additional traffic in and out
of our neighborhood, this is an ideal time to begin implementing a PROVEN safety program to ensure we are able to
maintain the quality of our lovely neighborhood.
